16th Emirates Pathology, Digital Pathology and Cancer Conference
Speaker Spotlight: Dr. Ekaparna Hazarika
Exploring New Diagnostic Frontiers in
Breast Pathology
Title of Talk: Metaplastic Carcinoma of Breast
– An Old Histotype with New Diagnostic Challenges: Experience of an Oncology
Referral Centre
In the ever-evolving field of pathology, where precision and
innovation intersect, Dr. Ekaparna Hazarika
stands out as one of the promising young minds shaping the future of
oncopathological diagnostics. Representing Gauhati Medical College and
Hospital, Assam, India, Dr. Hazarika brings to the global
pathology community her insightful research and clinical experience on one of
the most complex and diagnostically challenging entities in breast pathology — Metaplastic
Carcinoma of the Breast (MCB).
Her talk, titled “Metaplastic Carcinoma of Breast – An
Old Histotype with New Diagnostic Challenges: Experience of an Oncology
Referral Centre,” delves deep into the intricate morphologic and molecular
diversity of MCB, an uncommon yet highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer.
Through her experience at an oncology referral center, Dr. Hazarika sheds light
on the evolving understanding of this disease, emphasizing the importance of
early recognition, differential diagnosis, and the integration of advanced
immunohistochemical and molecular tools in routine diagnostic practice.
Dr. Ekaparna Hazarika completed her MBBS in 2017,
and went on to pursue an MD in Pathology from Gauhati Medical College and
Hospital, Assam, which she successfully completed in 2023.
Her keen academic curiosity and dedication to advancing cancer diagnostics led
her to undertake a Fellowship in Oncopathology at the State Cancer Institute, Assam,
India.
Her areas of professional interest include Oncopathology, Head and Neck
Oncology, Breast Pathology, and Lymphoma, where she continues to
contribute to both clinical excellence and academic advancement. She combines
her strong foundation in pathology with a research-driven approach to unravel
complex disease mechanisms and improve diagnostic precision in cancer care.
Her Perspective on Metaplastic
Carcinoma
Metaplastic carcinoma represents a unique diagnostic
conundrum — a “chameleon” of breast neoplasms that mimics benign and malignant
lesions alike. Dr. Hazarika’s presentation aims to discuss not only the
histopathological spectrum of MCB but also the novel diagnostic strategies that
are reshaping how pathologists identify and classify such cases. Drawing upon
her clinical encounters at a high-volume oncology referral centre, she offers
practical insights into distinguishing metaplastic carcinoma from its mimics
and underlines the role of multidisciplinary collaboration in achieving optimal
patient outcomes.
Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent malignancies
worldwide, and within this domain, metaplastic carcinoma poses a particular
diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. By documenting and analyzing
institutional experiences, Dr. Hazarika’s work contributes significantly to a
better understanding of this rare histotype, highlighting diagnostic pitfalls,
prognostic implications, and therapeutic perspectives that can ultimately
influence patient management.
As an emerging pathologist, Dr. Hazarika represents a new
wave of medical professionals who seamlessly bridge classical morphology with
modern molecular diagnostics. Her work underscores the importance of continuous
learning, academic curiosity, and evidence-based practice in pathology.
Through her presentation, she not only brings attention to
an often-overlooked entity in breast cancer but also exemplifies how young
researchers and clinicians can make meaningful contributions to the global
scientific community.
Join Dr. Ekaparna Hazarika
as she presents her groundbreaking insights at the 16th Emirates Pathology, Digital Pathology &
Cancer Conference, where experts from across the world convene
to discuss cutting-edge developments in cancer diagnostics and therapy.
